It's a two for one deal: write one character who is in a rivalry with some other particular character, and then you can reuse their plots and abilities! Generalizes even further: you can put them in competing mafias participating in Mafia Wars; saves you from having to write different group plots (to the extreme, you could make the entire game symmetric, although as far as anyone knows this has never been attempted except in SIK games.)

Although lame in some aspects, rivals often have the positive benefit that they are balanced by definition; each player has the same resources and the same goals, and the competition can evolve organically. However, if one of the rivals phones it in, a rivalry plot can be very unsatisfying for a character.
